Frank Ocean is an American singer, songwriter, and rapper whose music is popular with both audiences and critics. Even if you don’t listen to his music, you’ve probably seen memes and other stuff concerning his irregular performance and release schedule.

Like many of his previous songs, “Bad Religion” is about love, with Frank talking about his experience with an unrequited love with a taxi driver. When the song was first published, specific phrases from the chorus drew notice, sparking discussion over what they meant.

And you say ‘Allahu Akbar’
I told him, ‘Don’t curse me’
‘Bo Bo, you need prayer’
I guess it couldn’t hurt me
If it brings me to my knees, it’s a bad religion

Bad Religion

Allahu Akbar is an Arabic phrase that means “God is greatest,” and it is commonly used in Islam. Frank Ocean’s reaction “Don’t curse me” has been interpreted in a number of ways. A common one is that Ocean already suffers from the “religion” of love and doesn’t wish to have another.

Another possible explanation is that Ocean’s attraction to males has been looked upon by many people of different religions, therefore he may interpret the prayer negatively.

The line, “If it brings me to my knees, it’s a bad religion” drew opposing reactions, as many religions, including Islam, require kneeling to worship. This is also supposed to have a double meaning since the “bad religion” is clarified in the song’s outro.

It’s a, it’s a bad religion
To be in love with someone
Who could never love you
Oh, oh, oh, only bad, only bad religion
Could have me feeling the way I do

Bad Religion

Despite having a double meaning, some Muslims have considered the song’s lyrics annoying, leading to the present mixed reaction RM is facing over sharing the song as some want to clarify its deeper meanings.
